Biography

Alice Kuo examines issues pertaining to early education, such as child care and literacy development. She is the assistant director of UCLA’s Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities and is a clinical instructor in Pediatrics for the David Geffen School of Medicine. She also teaches medical students at UCLA and is developing the curriculum for the new Community Health and Advocacy Training Program in Pediatrics (CHAT). Kuo is a practicing physician, having completed medical school at UCLA and residency training in Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She currently sees patients at the Emergency Department at Cedars-Sinai and supervises UCLA pediatric residents at the Burke Health Center in Santa Monica. Kuo is a fellow in health services research in the National Research Service Award (NRSA) Program and is in the doctoral program in the UCLA Graduate School of Education. Her master’s thesis identified factors influencing parental report of reading to young children using the 2000 National Survey of Early Childhood Health (NSECH). Her doctoral dissertation will look at child care issues in California, using the Prop. 10 Public Opinion Survey on Early Care and Education.

Victor Perez, MD MPH

Biography

Dr. Pérez is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and has extensive experience in community pediatrics. He has completed fellowships in maternal and child health and child advocacy. He completed his Medical Degree at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and his pediatric residency training at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He earned his Masters of Public Health in the UCLA School of Public Health. Dr. Pérez is a Co-Director for the Community Health and Advocacy Training Program for the pediatric medical residents, and Assistant Director for the Maternal and Child Health Leadership Training Program. Dr.Pérez is also the Director of the Pathways for Students into the Health Professions Program, which was established to inspire undergraduates from underrepresented communities to consider a future in the health professions and to help them succeed in their academic and professional goals. He is a general pediatrician who cares for children through the UCLA Department of Pediatrics. His research interests include health disparities facing Latino children; cultural issues pertaining to health care of children and families; and place-based community development for culturally-diverse, underserved populations.

Todd Franke, PhD MSW

Biography

Todd Franke received his MSW from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and his PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Franke’s major areas of interest include quantitative methods and evaluation, the integration of health and social services in schools, and violence in the lives of children and adolescents. His specific areas of interest include the theory and applications of utilization-focused evaluations, the policy implications of school restructuring to integrate health and social services, and the association between family characteristics and violence in childhood and adolescence. Franke is presently an associate professor in UCLA’s Department of Social Welfare and is the associate director of the Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities and is on the faculty of the Institute for Democracy, Education and Access (IDEA) in the Graduate School of Educational and Information Studies. Franke is currently responsible for the Department of Social Welfare’s specialization in school social work and co-directs the PPS (Pupil Personnel Services) credentialing program.
